At a recent demo for the Space Coast Woodturners, John Jordan announced that he will NO longer sell the Stubby, due to the weak U.S dollar.

Bob,

Exchange rate is only part of the problem. I understand that ocean freight rates have taken off as well. The exchange rate with AUS since I bought my Stubby last year has gone up about 6%. Know Terry Daniels who sold VB-36 and Vicmarcs has mostly stopped importing iron too. I'm sure that John, Terry, and others will pick up again when either the dollar gets stronger or the AUS manufacturers cut their prices to stay competitive.

You get to the $6,500-7,000 level and you can start calling Mr. Nichols to make you a custom machine.

Oneway hasn't raised your prices yet and there aren't any oceans between Ontario and the contiguous 48. You can buy it right from the manufacturer without worrying about the servicing dealer going away. When you have a question or need help, you can talk to a member of the family that owns the company. I almost bought the Stubby but was concerned about the stability of the manufacturer/dealer relationship. Gee, I finally did something right. I'd better go tell my wife!

Ditto. There are a number of great lathes in this class, but I made my choice after very carefully considering the alternatives. It's sad that economic conditions may serve to limit the availability of some of these great machines to folks looking to buy "now" or in the near future. The more choices you have, the more likely you can buy a machine best suited to your individual needs.
