As for restoring machinery, I happened to run across a fellow here in Tennessee that restores horse-drawn wagons, buggies, etc. for private use and museum displays. He has an ancient mortising machine to mortise wagon wheels and run off belts that were originally cowhide or buffalo hide.
It is told that a person asked a woodturner how he turned a sphere. He remarked, "Just run off anything that doesn't look like a sphere."
