This is a collaboration piece. Bob Dadik made the segmented base from maple, and Rich Colvin made the ornamentally turned top using Padauk on the MDF Rose Engine Lathe 2.0.
My first segmented piece… I used maple with walnut veneer to give a “grout” line look. Top and bottom rings are from walnut to contrast and tie together. Lid is curly maple with walnut knob, reflecting the box shape.
180 segments per row with 62 rows. Around 12.5" diameter and 9.5" high. Made with Maple, Bloodwood, Yellowheart, Chacka Viga, and Wenge. Took around 150 hours to make.

I’ve noticed that a lot of guys are using some sort of “black paper” between each segment in which looks really sharp.
What is this paper type material?
Before carving away what didn't belong, this was a 1344-piece, segmented turning. These are all natural colors: wenge, lyptus, chakte kok, aspen, purpleheart and yellowheart. This is looking straight down into the turning.
