To all members,
For the last two weeks I have been coughing my head off. I can't sleep for coughing, been to the doctor ,taking symbocort, and still not getting rid of this problem.
I haven't been in the shop for two weeks, guess it was a reaction to some dust from some type of green wood, nothing exotic.
I want to remind everyone to wear the best mask you can afford, I didn't and don't know when I will shake this cough.
The doctor wants to exray my lungs to find out what is going on.
I hope this doesn't effect my ability to turn.
Wish I had taken more effort in selecting a good mask. Gary:(

Had the same problem about 9 or 10 months ago. The Doc said I was allergic to
Oak Mold not the wood BUT just the wet wood mold. The Oak I was turning had been laying on the ground in a low spot so it stayed wet allot and thats were the mold got into the wood. There was no sign of the mold like you usually
see the wood look normal but the mold was in the wood. I've had COPD for a while now and the Doc just put me on new medicine and I have to use a faceshield respirator now.
Hope everything works out ok for you.

You might ask if he thinks it could be one of 2 germs--pertussis or mycoplasma. Both cause very severe coughing that can go on for several weeks. (and have nothing to do with wood working) We just had a small outbreak of pertussis in our community, so it's fresh in my mind.

I just found out that our doctor gives adults the tetanus booster with the pertussis booster combined. I didn't think to ask if it also had the diphtheria vaccine.

How's the RH? Give yourself a bit of extra water vapor at night. Cold vapor wants good antiseptic cleaning, because it won't sanitize itself like the steam generating kind. If it's infection or allergy, the mask wouldn't have done much anyway. All it takes is a single bacterium or spore to get started in a favorable environment. Not like dust irritation which takes a near-opaque atmosphere or other chemical fumes common in the shop which are also pretty obvious.

Pertussis is making a comeback because of "personal freedom" conflicting with societal safety. With Oprah off the air, I imagine Rosie will have the vaccination refuseniks on her show now.

I got my pertussis booster because of the grandkids. The shingles shot is another worth getting, for personal reasons.

Thanks to all,
I have had the shingles and the phenumonia shot and the flu shot but this is something else.
I hope I can shake it soon, I am tired of this coughing and as I said, I have't been in the shop for weeks now.
I will keep you posted on what the doctor does with me. Gary

Whooping cough has been in the news here in Montana recently.....we've had an outbreak of it.

......just to plant that information into the back of your mind! :D

Does the tetanus booster contain the diphtheria and whooping cough booster in all cases or does each doctor decide what will be in the tetanus booster?

I am thinking that there must be many adults who are overdue for a tetanus booster if all boosters contain all three vaccines and there are outbreaks of whooping cough occurring.

to all,
I went back to the doctor for a chest xray ( exray) and it didn't show much to be concerned about except I am still coughing. I was taken off my blood pressure meds for i was told my type could cause coughing. I am suppose to stay off it for 5 days and se if it is better. If not he will send me to a specialist for ashma.
Something has to be done for this is awful. Gary

so the cough could be due to your blood pressure pills, one of the many side effects, do what the doctor tell you and GET WELL

Ray,
When it comes to food, I am fine. It is just my coughing. I have to sleep propped up on pillows and if I talk too much it starts the coughing more. It is driving me crazy. I stopped my blood pressure medicine and as of yet I can't tell any difference. I will give it to Monday and then back to the doctor. Thanks Ray, Gary

More than you ever wanted to know about pertussis--

The diphtheria-tetanus is the traditional adult booster and is still available. The diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis booster is preferred for all people from 12-65 who need a booster. Over 65, the official recommendation is the dip-tet booster, but recently they changed to 'allow' the dip-tet-pertussis in people over 65. At this point, the dip-tet-pertussis is only recommended one time--so those getting one in 2010 would go back to the dip-tet for their next one. (By 2020 they'll have a new recommendation of some sort)

Pertussis immunization is about 85% effective and apparently the effectiveness declines over time, hence the need for boosters. With over 1 in 6 adolescents and adults susceptible, the germ will always have enough people available to keep it around. And a surprising number of young parents think the smart thing to do is not immunize their children, or delay immunizing, which puts them at risk of real whooping cough, with about a 5% mortality rate in spite of modern medicine. Not the 3 weeks of obnoxious but otherwise not serious cough that people who have been immunized but have become susceptible again would get.
