This 9-inch tall vase was turned from punky oak on the lathe with a technique known as therming. Therming allows multiple spindles to be turned to the same shape simultaneously. Unique shapes can be created and all surfaces are curved at the outside diameter of the therming rig. You may notice the vase looks similar to my recent post for a thermed cherry vase with a dark center textured band. The two vases were created (thermed) at the same time, but their outward appearances are very different. Pyrography and color were used on the Oak vase to create a southwestern motif. Or maybe it is a 70s flower child look. You decide. Bottom line is that twins seldom end up looking exactly alike. Finish is blood red alcohol dye on the base and colored pens on the middle section where the pyrography designs exist. Watco oil buffed on the Beall system completed the finishing.
