On The Surface

We all look different, sound different, act different, feel differently and have differing opinions on everything. On the surface we struggle daily with making ourselves more different even to the point of driving a wedge between ourselves and others at times. Interesting thing is on the inside we’re all the same. Human.

The four bowls that make up this piece are from the same section of the same log from the same tree. I turned them all in the same session, kept them together and allowed them to dry in the same manor at the same time. They are the the same size and thickness, made with the same tools on the same machine. The toolmarks have been left and they are also almost the same. They were painted in the same session as well. Yet every bowl reacted differently. They all warped in different directions. One has a void where a branch inclusion rotted out, one has a small section that cracked and broke off. The patination patterns are different even though I tried really hard to have each piece painted as identically as possible. On the inside, at their core they are still the same.

Wall sculpture in Maple. 33 inches by 8 1/2 inches overall size. Each bowl is 8 1/2 inches diameter. Bronze reactive paint and bailing wire. This is the 5th piece in my “On The Inside” series. This series is a collection of work telling stories and sharing some of my own personal thoughts on life.
