Mulberry Burl NE Bowl

Mulberry Burl NE Bowl

Before the corona chaos, family and I were out and about. My wife suddenly said, "Ryan, a downed tree!" We pulled in to check, and sure enough, a mulberry tree covered in burls had been dropped a year earlier. I knocked on the door. They said, "Take it all!" So I did.

This is the first bowl from the score. It is 11" x 6". It is once turned. In order to balance it, I set the blank on it's top on my workbench. Then I secured a faceplate, leveling the faceplate with wedges so as to achieve a perfect balance on the NE. It worked for me. I turned it to 3/8" thick, left it to dry for a month (the wood was already low moisture), and finish sanded it. I accentuated the rim with black acrylic. And I finished it with two coats of shellac sanding sealer and three light coats of wipe on poly. Then I buffed it with two compounds, but left off the carnuba wax. It has a wonderful satin glow and lots of chatoyance. Thanks for looking!
