Manta Ray with leather

Manta Ray with leather

Pohutukawa 150mm square
The body was carved textured and then finished with rub ons ,airbrushed and wire brushed to give the effect of leather .To the touch it feels like leather as well
This piece just received 2nd prize in The Taranakai wood skills competition in artistic wood turning
Terry, You should start turning for a living. Seriously, as usual beautiful piece. The texturing is outstanding and must have taken you forever.

Absolutely wonderful piece. The texturing, as you say and tried to do, does not look like wood, and the "wood" bowl seems flawless. I'd love to be able to hold it. It appears some of the texturing is by pyrography branding. How did you do the small pebble effect?

very nice, i just wonder what won 1st prize?

Thanks Norm,Hal,Charlie
Pohutakawa is a beautiful wood to work with ,because it is so hard it didn't take to being branded very well and yes took a full day just to brand .To get the rich red colour of the timber to come out I oil sanded first then spayed with lacquer.
I did manage to pick up another first with the Puriri peice previously posted so I was more than happy
Cheers

Terry, this signature piece is gorgeous!
