Kana'io Koa'ia

Kana'io Koa'ia

I apologized for the pictures, I took it with my iPhone, the bowl on the lathe. My photo booth is full of my work. I can't take it to the gallery, I keep some pieces in there because is dust-free. Last week, the State of Hawaii resident wildlife biologist, Fern Duvall, called me to tell me a Koa'ia he planted 25 years ago was dying. I went and we took it down. We took a picture in front of the tree at his suggestion. To certify that this a true bonafide Kana'io Koa'ia and in case someone grumbles about me taking down an endangered tree. He got the seeds from a small grove of Koa'ia in the small town of Kana'io. This grove grew very differently from the Koa'ia at the Pi'iholo ranch of the Makawao area, smaller, denser, and more gnarly. Complete different ecosystems. His yard is like walking at the Maui arboretum. Fern showed countless native Hawaiian plants and trees. My favorite was a few species of native Sandalwood. As a thank you I made this little NE bowl with 2 spheres. All finished with Parfix CA and the Beall buffing wheels. Fern has agreed to let me interview him for our Club's Facebook page and Youtube. He will talk about the difference between Cook Pine and Norfolk Island pine. He is the second expert to tell me that Hawaii has hardly has any Norlfolk pine, 90% or more of it is Cook Pine.
