Been thinking about doing something on these lines for a while. It took a little practice to control and get the desired effect. The choice of wood, Ambrosia Maple, was not the most ideal. It looked great until l applied oil and became too dark and takes away from the design. Approx. 8.5” dia.
I agree, the wood grain is too "busy" and detracts from the design, a plain wood would be more suitable, but still a great concept and execution. Very well done.
 
I like the rim design. I've used pickling stain on the dish part of platters to tone down the figure. White acrylic artist paint used as a wiping stain might work just as well.
