Butternut End Grain Hollow Form

Butternut End Grain Hollow Form

A relative of my wife contacted me and asked if I would craft a series of turnings from a "Walnut" tree that was wind damaged and harvested from their property. They live in Indiana; I live in Arkansas. They hauled the entire tree down to me. Turns out that it is Butternut "White Walnut." I asked them if they realized how many turnings can be made from this tree. They had no idea that it would make over 100 turnings. But when I told them, they said that they would buy every one that I made for them. So, I began roughing out pieces in August and am now finishing some of them. I am making a series of bowls, platters, vases, hollow forms, boxes, and vessels. This piece is end grain hollowed and is 10" in diameter. I have finished it with Shellac and then 3 step Bealle buffed. This wood has a wonderful natural chetoyance when sanded to 1000. And the color is quite beautiful. I will post more pieces in the future. Thanks for viewing!
