Asian Ironwood burl yo-yo

Asian Ironwood burl yo-yo

This has got to be one of my favorite turning woods. So hard and dense. A real pleasure to turn.
Gerald, yes that is correct...a decorative shield of protection. But there is another reason for the rubber o-rings, or at least the channels they sit in. Can you guess what turning related purpose the o-ring channels serve?

beautiful Finnish....super

Gerald, yep...that's pretty much it. Here's a quick photo essay on how I do it. After turning the first side, the right-hand channel edge is used as a perfect auto-alignment tool when the piece is flipped to finish the second side. Makes a perfectly balanced yo-yo every time, if your measurements are precise. Dovetail jaws are needed to lock in the flipped piece for side two turning.
