Ancient Flame Bowl

Ancient Flame Bowl

This supported bowl was turned using multiple techniques and hardwoods. The three legs were turned off-center on a therming rig using spindles formed from alternating segments of Canary Wood and Zircote (most likely). Therming creates multiple copies of turned spindles with all surfaces curved. The bowl was turned on-center from a block of Walnut and the edges were cut to form a triangular shape. Texturing, coloring and carving were used on the edge embellishments. The middle support block was made from Bubinga. Over all the bowl is 8 inches in diameter and stands 8 ½ inches tall. The shape is reminiscent of ancient flame holding bowls used in Roman and Greek times. Finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system.
Nicely done Brian! Adding the segmenting to your theming technique is a nice add, texturing and flattening adds the right amount of eye candy!!

Good eye! Pieces of the other woods I used were too thin to make the triangular center brace, so I picked an alternative. A lot of times my wood decisions are driven by what do I have on the shelf...
