Folks,

I'd like to start off with expressing my most sincere apologies for the forums being unavailable today.

We initially decided on implementing the latest version of vBulletin Connect 5.0.5 forums software, which is a completely new re-write of the product. As John and others can attest, there were just so many bugs, that we couldn't move forward with that version. So we decided to install vBulletin 4.2.2, which is the most recent version of the previous codebase before they re-wrote vBulletin.

As of now, things seem to be working smoothly, but we'd appreciate it if you let us know of any anomalies / glitches / bugs that you come across.

We'll be diligent in jumping on those ASAP.

We also lost some data over the past 24 hours. This was due to the fact that new posts and Gallery uploads were made when we had vBulletin 5.0.5 online. Sadly, you cannot revert your data from version 5.x to version 4.2.2. Thus, there was no way for me to restore the posts and photos that were submitted during the last 24 hours.

I sincerely apologies for this.

I would like to inform many of you that ForumRunner has been installed and is functional. You may find that using your iPad with the standard style or the mobile style, yields you great results. Regardless, ForumRunner is there in you'd like to use that.

Again, my most sincere apologies for the inconveniences that were caused during the forums upgrade process. We hope that the AAW Forums are now at a happy place and moving forward we can continue to build upon things.

Feel free to contact myself or John with any questions, comments or concerns.

Have a good one,

Michael Seufer

Thanks for the effort. I know I'd rather be at the dentist than spend the weekend installing software.

Thanks!

Glad to see this version of vBulletin up this morning! The "improved" one was clunky and difficult to navigate. Great choice, guys!

Thanks

It was painfully obvious that v5 wasn't ready for prime time, so thanks for doing the right thing so that we could return to discussing woodturning instead of beta testing software. With the upgrade from v3.X.X to 4.2.2 what are the improvements that we will see as users?

Hi Bill,

I don't have a comprehensive list of improvements because there was such a big jump from the old version that was previously running to the new one. Forums users should notice:

  • Speed and performance improvements
  • Layout improvements
  • Members who have Visited Today
  • User Reputation Display
  • Who Has Read a Thread
  • Double-Post Prevention
  • Security Updates
  • Enhanced Mobile Support

I hope everyone is enjoying the new forums updates.

Many thanks,

Michael

Thanks for the details. It didn't occur to me how old our previous version was. The features do indeed sound quite worthwhile. It also looks like v5 promises to be a substantial step up.

Error in navigating identified

I am using an iPhone with Safari as my browser and the full site rather than the mobile version. When I get to the end of a thread and tap on Main Forum, it takes me to the first post of the thread instead. Tapping on Main Forum in the heirarchical list at the top then gets me back to the main forum thread listing.

When I tried the mobile version earlier, I couldn't figure out how to get out of a thread and go to the forum list of threads. Perhaps that might be because I do not have Forum Runner installed.

Clarification

I have figured out that the "button" at the end of the thread is actually a drop down list, but there is one oddity -- if I am not quick enough in making a selection it automatically sends me to the first post. I don't think that it is typical for a drop down list to do that.

vBulletin 5 looks very promising. I think you had a glimpse of how slick it looked. Sadly, it's just not ready for prime-time. The AAW has a license that enables free upgrades for the foreseeable future. I will be monitoring its progress and when it's ready for prime-time, we'll test it in a test server environment (and maybe even you might be interested in helping to test it) and if it looks good, we'll upgrade to it when it's ready.

As for mobile support, I don't want to make a promise I can't keep, but I might have a surprise or two in store in the coming weeks. We'll see… ;)

Best,

Featured Photos

The site is looking and working way better than when the V5 was up. :D
I'm glad to see the "Members Featured Photos" back up on the front page, I missed that the last few days with V5.
Not that is was working with the old version anyway.

I don't know how everyone else feels, but I preferred it when it used to show the most recent posts.
Now it shows random pictures. I kind of like seeing the new pictures of what people have been working on recently.

Maybe it's just me?

Hi Ralph,

Can you explain what you mean by the following so that I might understand it better:

I preferred it when it used to show the most recent posts.
Now it shows random pictures. I kind of like seeing the new pictures of what people have been working on recently.

Thanks,

Hi Michael,

On the old site when the photo gallery was working properly, any new photo posted would show up on the front page on the left side of the display. Each new photo would then bump it over until it fell off the other end of the display. The display now is showing random pictures from years back. The way it is now you don't see the newest posting unless you go to the gallery page and set it to "most recent". I just personally prefer to see the newest photos without doing that.

photo gallery

At the top of the gallery are three tabs : Most Recent · Most Popular · Random

Choose the view you want to see...

This is how the new version works by design.

I understood, that is by design.

I rather like having the page look fresh every time I go to it, which is more often than most.

... Changed to most recent view due to popular demand :)

Time stamp

When I posted it was 2 hours till the time I keep. Eastern Daylight saving time, or the time in the middle of the Atlantic, perhaps Titanic time?

Otherwise it looks good.

Stu,

At the top right of the web page in the dark blue area, click on "Settings". Then on the far left of the Settings page, click on "General Settings". Then scroll down to Date & Time Options and set your time zone.

That should do it.

Bug report

I edited a post and then discovered there was no button to save the changes. However there was a button labeled Vote Now. I clicked it and the editing changes were saved. It appears that some code for voting in a poll got mixed up with editing changes.

Were you doing this on your phone, tablet or desktop computer? Can you fill that info in for me?

Thanks,

Michael,

For the last several visits, the software is not remembering my login info even though the 'remeber me' box is checked. The info was remembered for a while when this version was installed.

After logging in, a message of "invalid redirect" is displayed.

Dale, you might need to verify that your browser is saving the cookies for this site. Sometimes things can change in your computer such as browser updating to the latest version, computer restoring to an earlier state, virus software affecting what is allowed to be stored on your PC, phase of the moon, etc.

I agree with Bill, I think it's the phase of the moon that's causing your log in issues. ;)

In all seriousness, Bill's right - you might want to verify your browser settings. What browser are you using?

I'm looking into this, Bill.

I'll see if I can replicate it the error and figure out what's going on.

Thanks,

Michael, I just finished editing a post and did not encounter the error. If you didn't fix anything maybe it is one of those mysterious things that heals itself.

Bill. That was a feature that was added back in 5.x. It is not part of the 4.x install. As you may have noticed there were issues with that feature.

John, you must be confusing it with something else because that is not correct. It has always been there in v3X. I referenced it frequently and also used it's sorting feature when searching usernames. When v5 came out, I reported a problem about it along with a suggestion. I am not certain if I viewed the members list in v4.2.2 before yesterday evening, but in any event it is not completely gone --it contains only two names now instead of thousands.

Hi Dale,

I use Dolphin Browser (mini) myself on Android.

Be sure that you don't have any settings in Dolphin checked that clears cookies and data after you quit. I had mine set that way.
