I don’t look at turning as a business, and certainly don’t expect to generate any significant income from it, but on more than a few occasions, when I’ve given someone a bowl in appreciation for wood from a tree they’ve had cut down, or just because I want to share my work, I’m asked if I’ve got a web site. So, I’ve bit the bullet and put one together. I’ve read previous postings here for advice and website builders that folks have used. I didn’t want to spend much, but did want a product I’d be proud to have folks look at. I thought my experience might be helpful to others.
After struggling with Wordpress, which I’ve used in the past for blogs, I gave up on that, as I’ve got no coding experience, and found the interface just a bit too awkward. I found a site that was reviewed very positively called Carrd. It allows the building of one page sites with limited features, but promised to be easy to use. It was. I registered my domain name https://loujacobswoodturning.com/ through google domains for $12, and paid $19 (annual fee) to Carrd for their pro version which, among other upgrades to their basic service, allows me to use a custom domain. I preferred that to something like xxxx.Wordpress.com. The most challenging part of the process for me was telling it the settings to use from google domains so that the site could be retrieved. Their support was helpful with this, as was a YouTube video I found. At this level of payment, it did not allow e-commerce functions (linking payments or ordering features) but I think I’ve found a way around that that allows me to show prices and have communication with any prospective customers, should they be interested.

Sounds like a success, Lou. I took a quick look and the site presents well on my phone. If I were a real customer I'd wish I could click on one of your offerings and get more pictures, but that would go way beyond the goals of a simple one page set up.

Have you looked at Instagram at all? I can't say that I love the platform, and there's a learning curve, but it did give me a space where I could direct people to look for pictures of stuff I've done.

Had Godaddy for a while. Quit my "business" and they wouldn't prorate 9 months of their fee. Scratched them off the list.

I have no experience with Instagram, but I understand that I should link to it to post more pictures. I’ll study that.

Looks good Lou. I use Square. It is free for a basic site but is for sales. Not fancy but gets the job done. It was easy to setup and if you do not want a domain you can do it without . But I wanted a unique easy to remember name , so bought a domain.

I like your site Gerald. Thanks for sharing it. I like how clicking on a photo puts visitors right In the buying mode. I have an account with square for payments from when I was working (I had a psychotherapy practice). I haven’t used it for turning, but I suppose I could.

Thanks . I think they do a lot more stuff than I use it for but you can watch the videos for all that stuff plus lots more if you pay for it.
