I don’t look at turning as a business, and certainly don’t expect to generate any significant income from it, but on more than a few occasions, when I’ve given someone a bowl in appreciation for wood from a tree they’ve had cut down, or just because I want to share my work, I’m asked if I’ve got a web site. So, I’ve bit the bullet and put one together. I’ve read previous postings here for advice and website builders that folks have used. I didn’t want to spend much, but did want a product I’d be proud to have folks look at. I thought my experience might be helpful to others.
After struggling with Wordpress, which I’ve used in the past for blogs, I gave up on that, as I’ve got no coding experience, and found the interface just a bit too awkward. I found a site that was reviewed very positively called Carrd. It allows the building of one page sites with limited features, but promised to be easy to use. It was. I registered my domain name https://loujacobswoodturning.com/ through google domains for $12, and paid $19 (annual fee) to Carrd for their pro version which, among other upgrades to their basic service, allows me to use a custom domain. I preferred that to something like xxxx.Wordpress.com. The most challenging part of the process for me was telling it the settings to use from google domains so that the site could be retrieved. Their support was helpful with this, as was a YouTube video I found. At this level of payment, it did not allow e-commerce functions (linking payments or ordering features) but I think I’ve found a way around that that allows me to show prices and have communication with any prospective customers, should they be interested.
