I spent the last two days cleaning and organizing my shop. On the list of to-do, things for the last few years was to somehow get the drills and sanders off the top of the bench. They would get lost in the shavings and the most annoying thing was how the cords would get all tangled up. My solution won't win any beauty contests but I'm happy with the results. I know John Lucas has a good system to hang things on the walls as well as Mike Peace. My wall space is at a premium. What other solutions and or ideas are out there?

Happy about the two replies. My solution is minimalist, I like to add elegant after that! LOL And I'm happy I inspired somebody to do something similar. Don't forget to show us what you come up with, just post it here on this thread. Aloha

I wish I had more wall space to do some of those things. Emiliano, just make sure you don't get your sandpaper mixed up with your toilet tissue. Hard to sand with Charmin.

I have hunted a lot, all over the world. I have been known to be very creative in the bush when nature calls and the TP got all wet or you forgot to repack some. But I have never used 80 grit, LOL

I'm visualizing a solution for you. It involves hanging devices from the ceiling, something like the retracting wheels used for service station air hoses. Only in this case they would allow you to pull down the sander you desire and when done, reactivate the retracting mechanism on the power cord to return the drill back up to the ceiling. Or something like a ceiling fan, except flat blades and a power strip in the center. You cut notches in the sides for the sanders to fit into, or use velcro, then when you need a sander you reach up, spin the wheel until the desired one is in the right spot, grab it and use it and put it back up when done. A good sized plywood disc with notches would work, too. I got a million of these ideas, just stop me when your hear one you like. ;)

Believe it or not, I briefly looked at the ceiling above the lathe, LOL Maybe that would work for the pneumatic orbital sanders, always within reach.

My shop is my basement. I have 2 "ceiling mount" automatic air hose reels - actually they are mounted in between the floor joists of the main floor. I set the stops so that I can extend my arm up above my head but without excessive strain - reach the end of the hose or object on them. They are hung so that without having to move, I can extend my left arm up, and slightly left, and have my Grex sander in hand. And, on my right I have another that has a soft tipped air nozzle. Also, have my Frugal Vacuum Chuck pump inverted and suspended overhead, and out my way. No hoses or cords to trip over or get tangled up.... as I had not considered it before....but this discussion makes me want to have an overhead electric auto reel also.
