As some of you know, I am brand spanking new to wood turning.. I have been trying to get my feet wet, so to speak, as cheaply as possible. After getting some great advice on what lathe tools should be my initial purchase ( already having an inexpensive lathe), I opted for a 1/2" bowl gouge, 1" roughing gouge, 3/8" spindle gouge , 1" standard skew, 1" round nose scraper, and a 3/4" X 1/8" parting tool all M2 HSS steel. While these don't have a big name engraved on the handle ( they are Benjamin's Best from Penn State Industries), they were ( from what I read ) a good value at all six for about $100.00... They arrived quickly and look like quality tools to me . We will see …..

Now its time to get a protective mask ..

Anyone use the Uvex Bionic face shield ? If so do you have the clear or the anti-fog coated ?

Send them to me and I'll put a BIG name on them. You are off to a good start. I have the Univex clear. I just use a shot of compressed air to clean off the dust.

I have the Uvex Bionic, and feel it's the best bet for face protection. That full plastic covering all around the clear lens does offer some extra impact protection, and there probably isn't a woodturner alive who wouldn't agree that any extra protection is worthwhile.

After trying the anti-fog lens, I decided the regular lens is the best way for me to go. Really didn't see any significant difference, if any.

Used to try and polish scratches away, but don't bother with it anymore. I now buy lenses in bulk, and replace them after they start scratching up. The lenses will only last about 6-8 months before needing replacement.....will probably last longer for some others who are not a full-time turner like I am. (No matter how hard you try, the lenses will get scratches and abrasions.) Best to never touch the lens, and only use air to take off the dust. I'm using eyeglass lens cleaner and soft cloth, or the disposable lens wipes to clean, when necessary.

I use the Uvex Bionic shield as well and I second what Odie mentioned. I believe it is one of the best face shields on the market. It has saved my bacon several times! :D

I use the Uvex Bionic shield and think it's great. I have the regular shield. BTW- Does anyone know if the Uvex Bionic replacement shields are available with COVID around? I procured the shield (and misc tools) with my lathe and was looking for a source for a new shield since mine is pretty scratched up. I Googled a while back and everything I saw said "backordered". Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Some things that we backordered in the spring have actually started showing up, so it might be worthwhile to get on that list.

I agree, wood dust is more abrasive than you might realize. I use compressed air, but if that's not effective I will also hold the face shield under running water, then allow to air dry. (For the PAPR I have bought dissposable lens covers).

I'm another Uvex Bionic user ... I use the standard lens. Every day or so depending on what I am doing, I wipe the lens down with Parker's Perfect anti-fog cleaner. I use the same stuff on my safety glasses. https://www.parkersperfect.com/

Yes I've tried a lot of face shields over the years. The Uvex to me has the clearest vision. I use used dryer sheets to keep from fogging and clean it with plastic lens cleaner although I've been lazy about that lately.

Well I have had a Uvex and it is a great shield. However I bought a Sellstrom and liked that shield better than the Uvex. It had a better range of vision, I could wear ear protectors with it, and If I wanted I could wear a half mask respirator. I have since bought a PAPR system with a Versaflo shield. The one difference between the Versaflo and others is itv does not have the high impact rating, just impact rating. Many seem to think a shield must have the high impact rating, however I don’t think it is a major difference. The best is not to be in the “line of fire” when turning. None of these shields would offer protection if a really large chuck hit them. You would need a much more substantial shield. I am looking to be protected from the small pieces that come off in any direction. With the PAPR I have added dust protection that is just as important.
