Inside Outside Caliper Recommendation

Hi All:

I’m looking to purchase an inside outside caliper. Any recommendations? Is the Sorby worth the extra money?

I do a lot of boxes and thought an inside outside caliper would be just the thing. I used it about twice and it's been gathering dust for 6 years. So my recommendation is to be really sure you need one.

I use dividers or vernier calipers to mark opening dimensions

I have inside calipers I bought t 30 years ago but never use on turnings.

I have the large Sorby calipers and love them. They are very well made. I got lucky and found a good deal locally from Craigslist.

If you are referring to the figure 8 style I got a unit from Penn State. The Sorby is nicer, but PSI was much cheaper. I use them all the time, but I think that will depend on what you're making.

I use the inside-outside double caliper for measuring wall thickness. Other people use the double outside calipers (figure 8) for that.

Tool,I use for that is the veritas calipers. Also great for measuring hollow form walls. And hollow form bottom thicknesses.

I used the figure 8 style calipers for a number of years. Based on recommendations on this or another forum, I purchased the Keith Thomkin's Gage 'T calipers. Here's a video about it: https://www.keithptompkins.com/bowl-gauge

It's expensive, but in my opinion, is far superior to the figure 8 style calipers for measuring bowl wall thickness.

It's bent wire. Works well and it's cheap.
