If you are referring to the figure 8 style I got a unit from Penn State. The Sorby is nicer, but PSI was much cheaper. I use them all the time, but I think that will depend on what you're making.

I use the inside-outside double caliper for measuring wall thickness. Other people use the double outside calipers (figure 8) for that.
