That I didn't destroy. I've had my lathe for one month and have destroyed some timber and tool steel. Every chance I get I slip off to the shop and practice. I'm posting my first piece that didn't turn into shavings. It's a piece of the red oak that you guys warned me about. I'm making firewood out of the rest of it. I rough turned it and dried it in an old incubator that I made several years back. There is no design, I just cut wood away until no cracks were left, finished with Danish oil, and buffed with wax. I made a few tools also. I know the bowl is simple and nothing to show off, I just wanted to post my first.

You're off to a great start, Ron. It certainly is much better than my first few attempts. Be sure to keep this one to mark the beginning of your journey.

I'm curious about the bottom tool. It looks like a parting tool that has been repurposed into something else.

Looks quite nice! Doing those vertical sides are not always the easiest and your finish looks really good.
Thanks, Gary.

It is a 4x20x400 mm hss blank ground for cutting a recess when the tailstock is being used. I saw a video with Mark Silay grinding one while demonstrating. It should give a flat bottom with a 7° dovetail.

It looks really good and you picked a tough wood and shape to start and with.
Thanks, Stan.

I'm not even sure I let my wife see my first piece, it was that bad.

Great start!
