Rubber Chucky

I have a number of rubber Chucky products, have yet to find one that was not well worth having. My latest acquisition is the “Step Chuckyâ€. I’ve used a number of times and found it to be extremely convenient and easy-to-use. One set up and you are good to go. I used a paint pen to mark each step with a number. As I have two lathes with different size tool rest posts and more than one tool rest. I used a paint pen to label each of my tool rests with a number, different color for each lathe, showing the step # and the tool rest#. Once set up I found which step work for which tool and then used to paint pen again, same color as the tool rest, to mark the end of each tool with the number setting. That saved me two things, one I didn’t have to remember which step for which tool and I didn’t have to remember which step for which lathe. (See first two pictures) Trial and error for setting the tool rest height is gone! I also use the “Finial Chuckyâ€, it also works fantastic to keep the end from moving. (See second two pictures. Oh yah, that is the “Expansion Chucky" in the one left that I am using to hold the birdhouse in the lathe.) Don Doyle, the owner/inventor of rubber chucky, was a member of Tri County wodtuners.
We had the pleasure of being his Guinea pigs. All of his products are turner tested..... And he puts a lot of work into getting the right hardness for different applications.

I use the vacuum chucks, ball Chucky, expanding Chucky, and tips the screw on the live centers all the time.
An observation I have made through workshops for clubs is that often newer turners are more intimidated by making the holding device from wood than making the actual project. Don's device make it possible for novices to turn balls much more easily as well as doing many other turning

Below is a photo of a gavel head with a cast pewter band. I decided to re- turn the band after the centers were turn off.

I have the standard chucky - used twice today. I had a new turner over and she loved it.

Finial chucky is fun to use. Peppermill Chucky is the only way to make a peppermill - hands down. I also use the reverse chucky for hollow forms.

The stuff just works and is reasonable priced.

I have made a few of these types of chucking accessories over the years and used the plasti-dip
product to coat over a wood turned form. They make the product in a liquid that you can dip your
item into or a spray can that you can spray the product onto your item with. I have also used the
EC6000 adhesive to provide a flexible surface coat to these type of projects, works quite well. The
EC6000 product seems to last forever and will not delaminate from any surface applied to.

I ordered two of the inserts that are suppose to fit the HoldFast vacuum chucks as I was having problem with the HoldFast leaving marks on the bottom of bowels. I got a 3" and a 6" insert. I tried the 6" and it didn't solve the problem and it had problems sealing. I finally found a glue that would stick to the rubber but I still have to use the foam sheets from Walmart. I just put the 3" one in a drawer. The two items cost almost $40,

I wonder if I can use rubber Chuckie with a vacuum system from the frugal vacuum guy, the one that goes thru the spindle?

I would think yes

The rubber chucky base plate is a lot like a faceplate. It just has a groove for pvc instead of holes for screws.

Not sure which RC you are talking about. The seals will not fit the Frugal chucks without some stretching. They work fine but it does take a while to stretch them . Probably because of all the different types of PVC and I do not know which one the Chucky seals are made to fit.

If I remember I will take a picture of my vacuum chuck tomorrow. Then maybe you can tell me if I can use or somehow adapt a rubber chuckie to my set up.. Thanks.
