Glazer interchangeable tools

I recently came into the proud ownership of a set of old Glazer interchangeable tools with five gouges and red handle. These are not the new QR version but the ones made, I believe, in the 90s. I understand that these were made primarily for demonstrators and instructors that traveled extensively and did not want to carry full size tools.
I do not need these and before listing them in the market place I would like to get a feel for their value. Does any body have an idea?

Glynn, I have no idea about the value, but I just wanted to welcome you to your first post on the forum. I think that the right price for anything is one that makes the buyer and seller both happy.

I haven't ever seen the old ones made by Jerry Glaser, but I have one of the AAW twenty-fifth limited edition bowl gouges. My problem is that it seems too pretty to use so it just sits on a display shelf.

Knowing you I don't think there is any possibility of being kicked out of the "Loyal Order of Packrats" of which I am a charter member.
The Glazer QR is a new modular product that includes 8 tools and a handle with a quick disconnect feature. They are smaller tools than us old timers normally use. Checkout their website glazerhitec.com.
I should have added the sizes of the tools I have: one 3/8", one 1/2", two 5/8" and one long shank short flute 3/4" bowl gouges and the handle. All are in very serviceable condition.

OK, sounds like a real find for some rare tools. This is another brand that is new to me. Packrat? You should see my shop, basement, man cave. I had a mouse get lost for three days in my shop. Finally laid a trail of bird seed toward the door. Haven't seen him since. Probably spreading the word about his traumatic experience.

After doing a bunch of web searching, I am no closer to an answer than my first reply to your question.

The thing that I did find was that the new Glaser HiTec tools use the same steel (CPM 10V) and the same heat and cryogenic treatment from Crucible Industries as the Thompson lathe tools. That, in itself, doesn't mean they are equivalent because other factors like flute shape and machining quality are just as important. Jerry Glaser sold the rights to his business to Paulo Marin about a decade ago so the tools that you have must be older than that.

My opinion is that this isn't like selling a commonly available tool or lathe that has a typical second-hand price. I think that if you list them for what you would like to get for them, you'll find out soon enough if there are any takers.

I have a red handled glazer that uses two set screws to hold the gouge
Currently has a Thompson gouge in it because the glazer was not available for a while.

My red handled tool was a cheaper than the black handled tools.
Sherry has two black handled tools.

The red handled tools were CPM 10V and the Black were CPM 15V. Doug Thompson used Glaser tools and when Jerry sold the business to Paulo he about doubled the price. That is how Thompson Lathe Tools got its start in a garage attached to a house in Ohio. Doug does make replacement steel for the Glaser handles.

Would be interested in seeing a pic of the set you have. Several things go into the "worth" of the set. That would include: which 5 are included, how much life is left on each tool, are they original(or tools taken out of handles), and condition.

There is one 3/8", one 1/2", two 5/8" and one 3/4" (shank diameter, not flute width) plus the handle. The way these are made they have to be original. From what I have been told they were specifically made for instructors/demonstrators that needed a more compact way to transport their tools.

Those are original. And look to have good life left in each tool. I will be interested when you eventually post them for sale. I do a lot of traveling although rarely get time to turn while on the road but I always have a few tools including the QR set with me just in case. These would be perfect for that.

I put them through some paces today and all I can say is I was impressed. Sure wish Paulo would get the Synergy system to the market. The original set is just so smooth withe the ease of changing the gouges, I can only hope the Synergy set is as smooth.

Thanks for all of the help. Brian McInturff purchased the tools and per his post likes them quite well. Now I can get back to modifying my Powermatic 3520B banjo. I got tired of my tool rest dropping or rotating so I am making a modification that slots the banjo post and adds a clamping bolt/handle that compresses the banjo on the tool rest post. I will post photos on a new thread when I get finished.
